O MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) received 70 project proposals for the selection of low-carbon hydrogen hubs, aimed at decarbonizing Brazilian industry.

The announcement was made this Tuesday (03) by Patricia Naccache, general coordinator of Low Carbon Energy and Technologies and Innovation at the MME, during the hearing on hydrogen in industry in the Chamber of Deputies.

To achieve the goal of PNH2 (National Hydrogen Program) related to hydrogen hubs until 2035, the Ministry, in partnership with the MDIC (Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade) and the MF (Ministry of Finance), opened a public call where proposals were presented with projects from all regions of Brazil.

The projects submitted cover various energy sources, such as wind, ethanol, biomass and solar, as well as various industrial segments such as fertilizers, cement, refining, steelmaking and transportation.

Green hydrogen to account for up to 12% of global energy use by 2050, says Irena

“Brazil needs to follow the right path for the development of hydrogen, taking advantage of its great potential for the decarbonization of the industry. The projects presented range from 1 to 350 tons of hydrogen per year, with a production cost between two and eight dollars per kilo, and an average of 4,72 dollars per kilo,” said Patricia.

With PNH2, the MME defined three priorities until 2025: definition of the regulatory framework, approved in August; the goal of increasing annual investments in R&D&I (Research, Development and Innovation) sevenfold, with a focus on cost reduction, achieved two years ahead of schedule; and the goal of expanding access to financing.

The general coordinator recalled that the Ministry is structuring a decree to regulate what is provided for in the Hydrogen Law. “We are identifying several points that need to be regulated in the Law. This is an intense process, carried out by the Ministry together with the other 10 ministries that make up the PNH2, in addition to partner institutions”, she concluded.

Green hydrogen law will provide R$18,3 billion in tax incentives
